New Normal Workplace
The business imperatives that follow are applicable for businesses of any size and describe some of the fundamental changes that must occur in the workplace if it is to be effective at energizing, directing and sustaining employee performance.
Viewing People Performance Through a New Lens
Performance and contribution will be viewed as being more fluid than static. Emphasis will be placed more on continual improvement and progress instead of focusing solely on snapshot events, such as the annual performance review, to assess and measure the effectiveness of employee contribution to the organization.
Out With Boring, Meaningless Work
In the new normal, successful organizations will develop meaningful, stimulating jobs that capitalize on individual strengths and are clearly linked to the organization’s mission. These organizations recognize that employees need to feel a sense of achievement and accomplishment in their work through role clarification, goal setting, and ongoing dialogue, feedback and coaching on performance.
Employees Must Become More Autonomous Performers
Employees must become more self-directed, autonomous workers who are prepared and empowered to be “owners” of their jobs and their performance. This change in focus must be supported by the way performance is managed and further reinforced by compensation and reward opportunities.
Managers Must “Manage” Employees in a New Way
A new breed of managers and supervisors must be developed who possess the competencies needed for success in the new normal and who support the paradigm shift required between manager and employee roles going forward. These managers will be equipped with the tools, training, and latitude necessary for creating high performance work environments that instill a sense of cooperation and mutual trust.
Talent Must Be Constantly Growing, Learning, and Sharing
All employees must have access, opportunity and encouragement to develop their talents in a work environment that cultivates continual learning, growth and information sharing.
So, what does it all mean?
Although these are uncertain times, opportunities still await businesses with the right model to succeed. Forward-thinking businesses understand that there is a “new employment deal” emerging between employers and employees. The way that work gets done and managers “manage” must undergo fundamental changes.
Never before has it been more important for businesses to have the most talented people in jobs that capitalize on their strengths, and where they are encouraged to contribute their individual best in support of the organization’s mission…but this must occur in a new way.
